About the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is a statutory public body established on 12 October 1993 under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. It is mandated to promote and protect human rights in India and to spread human rights literacy and awareness under Section 12(h) of the Act.
About the Opportunity
The NHRC invites applications for its Summer Internship Programme (SIP) 2026, aimed at sensitising students towards human rights issues through academic sessions, field exposure, and research-based learning.
The programme will be conducted from 1 June to 25 June 2026.
Eligibility
- Students who have completed 1st year and are pursuing 2nd/3rd year of 3-year LL.B.
- Students who have completed 3 years / Semester VI of 5-year law course and are entering 4th or 5th year
- Students pursuing:
- PG Diploma in Human Rights
- MA in Human Rights
- PG courses in Political Science, Sociology, Social Work (MSW), Criminology, Public Administration, Rural Development, History, Economics, Commerce, Anthropology, Mass Communication, International Relations, or other Social Sciences (preference to final-year students)
Structure of the Programme
The internship includes approximately 55-60 sessions covering various human rights issues. Key components include:
- Classroom lectures
- Interaction with NHRC Chairperson and Members
- Research project on human rights issues
- Book review
- Film screenings and discussions (child labour, trafficking, elderly rights, etc.)
- Field visits to institutions such as:
- Police Stations
- Jails
- NGOs
- Parliament and national commissions
Stipend
- ₹12,000 (lump sum) for the internship period
- Travel reimbursement (second-class train fare) for outstation candidates
Awards
- Top 3 Group Research Projects:
- 1st: ₹15,000
- 2nd: ₹10,000
- 3rd: ₹5,000
- Book Review Awards: Top 5 interns receive books (up to ₹1,000 each)
- Declamation Contest: Top 3 interns receive books (up to ₹1,000 each)
- Certificate awarded based on performance, attendance, and participation
