World Bank Legal Internship Program

The World Bank Legal Internship Program offers law students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the operations of the World Bank's Legal Vice Presidency. This program is designed to provide firsthand experience in the intersection of law and international development.
Program Overview
Interns will engage directly with seasoned professionals, contributing to the Legal Vice Presidency's services and participating in high-profile events and conferences. The program is structured into three cycles annually:
- Summer Internship Program: Application period from December 1 to December 31, with internships typically spanning 10-12 weeks between June and August.
- Fall Internship Program: Application period from April 1 to April 30, with internships typically spanning 10-12 weeks between September and November.
- Spring Internship Program: Application period from September 1 to September 30, with internships typically spanning 10-12 weeks between March and May.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the program, candidates must:
- Hold citizenship of any International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) member state.
- Be enrolled in an LLB, JD, LLM, SJD, PhD, or equivalent legal academic program during the internship.
- Possess excellent command of the English language.
Preference is given to candidates proficient in a second language, particularly those that are working languages of the IBRD (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish).
Both international and U.S.-based students are encouraged to apply.
Internship Responsibilities
Interns may be involved in:
- Conducting comparative legal analyses on various issues, identifying legal and policy matters, researching relevant precedents, and proposing solutions.
- Participating in task or project teams under the guidance of supervising lawyers.
- Assisting in the preparation and organization of conferences and meetings.
- Performing ad hoc assignments as requested by supervising lawyers.
Additional Information
- Visa: Interns must have valid student visa documents sponsored by their educational institutions. The World Bank may assist in obtaining visa documents in exceptional cases.
- Cost: The internship is unpaid. Interns are expected to secure funding through their universities or other sponsoring organizations, either via monetary compensation or academic credit.
- Medical Insurance: Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance and any related costs during the internship period. Proof of valid major global medical insurance coverage is required.
- Selection Process: Interns are selected through a competitive process. The World Bank Group is an equal opportunity employer.
- Onboarding: An onboarding session is organized at the beginning of each internship cycle.
- Performance Evaluations: The World Bank does not provide performance evaluations for interns.
