Standard Chartered is inviting applications for the role of Senior Legal Counsel – Group Commercial Legal.
The position is part of the Group Commercial Legal Centre of Excellence (COE) and involves leading legal support for global procurement, technology contracts, and outsourcing arrangements. The role also includes team leadership, strategic legal advisory, and oversight of third-party legal risk.
Job Summary
The Senior Legal Counsel will:
- Lead and supervise a team of Legal Counsels, providing guidance and escalation support
- Assist the Head, Legal COE in executing strategic initiatives and operational improvements
- Oversee global procurement contracts (technology and non-technology)
- Provide strategic legal advice on operational and regulatory risks
- Improve contracting processes, templates, and playbooks
- Promote strong compliance culture and ethical business practices
Key Responsibilities
Strategy & Leadership
- Support implementation of the Group Commercial Legal strategy
- Develop efficient legal service delivery models
- Drive talent development, coaching, and succession planning
- Engage stakeholders to improve legal processes and service quality
Commercial & Technology Contract Management
- Draft, review, and negotiate global procurement contracts, including:
- Software, SaaS, and cloud agreements
- Market data and subscription licenses
- Hardware and technology support contracts
- Business process outsourcing agreements
- Professional services contracts
- Intragroup servicing agreements
- Advise on technology procurement, outsourcing, data protection, and operational resilience
- Identify risks and provide legal mitigation strategies
Governance & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with Group Contracts Policy and Third-Party Risk Management Framework
- Maintain and update Department Operating Instructions
- Provide training and guidance to internal legal teams and stakeholders
- Manage external counsel engagements and legal expenditure
Risk & Dispute Management
- Identify and manage legal and operational risks
- Assist in resolving vendor disputes and pre-litigation matters
- Support regulatory remediation and legal change initiatives
Stakeholder Management
Work closely with:
- Supply Chain Management teams
- Enterprise and Country Legal teams
- Business and Global Function teams
- Disputes & Government Investigations Legal team
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Law
Skills & Experience
Preferred candidates should demonstrate:
- Strong knowledge of technology and commercial contracts
- Understanding of intellectual property and data protection laws
- Experience in outsourcing and procurement transactions
- Experience in the banking or financial services sector (preferred)
- Strong negotiation and contract management skills
- Ability to handle complex commercial legal matters
- Experience with cloud services, e-commerce, data privacy, and information security
- Strong analytical, strategic, and communication skills
