About the Project

NLSIU is undertaking cutting-edge empirical research on India’s criminal justice system, using public legal data, eCourts records, and Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools.
The project focuses on analysing sentencing patterns, bail decisions, undertrial incarceration, and the impact of social and regional disparities on judicial outcomes, while building a publicly accessible legal dataset to support long-term legal reform and research.

Role Overview

The selected Researcher will work closely with leading faculty members, including Prof. Mrinal Satish, Prof. Aparna Chandra, Prof. Rahul Hemrajani, and Prof. Nikita Ahalyan, on both desk and field research.

Key Responsibilities

• Navigating and analysing data from the eCourts platform
• Hand-coding judicial cases to build training datasets
• Analysing judgments and court orders for empirical insights
• Assisting in development of legal databases and open data portals
• Research on sentencing trends, bail decisions & judicial performance
• Drafting reports, papers, and policy-oriented outputs
• Supporting project coordination and administrative tasks

Eligibility Criteria

Essential:
• LL.B. OR Master’s degree in an allied discipline
• Demonstrated experience in research, data analysis, or large datasets

Desirable:
• Prior experience in empirical legal research
• Familiarity with coding / statistical analysis tools
• Strong research writing skills

Experience

• 0-5 years of academic or professional research experience
• Proven ability in legal research and writing
