About the Department of Legal Affairs
The Department of Legal Affairs (DOLA) functions under the Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India, and was established in 1961. The department is responsible for providing legal advice to various ministries and departments of the Government and for handling litigation involving the Union of India.
About the Internship
The Department of Legal Affairs conducts an Internship Programme for law students and law graduates.
The programme aims to provide practical exposure to the functioning of the Department and the legal processes within the Government of India.
Interns may assist with:
- Legal research and referencing
- Observing court functioning
- Assisting in drafting and legal analysis
- Work relating to specialised areas of law such as:
- Constitutional and Administrative Law
- Finance Law
- Infrastructure Law
- Economic Law
- Labour Law
- Conveyancing
- Arbitration and Contract Law
The internship is designed to familiarise participants with the government’s legal advisory and litigation work.
Eligibility
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Indian students who have completed:
- 2nd year of a 3-year LL.B. programme, or
- 3rd year of a 5-year integrated law programme
- Law graduates from any recognised law school, college, or university may also apply.
Preference will be given to candidates with advanced computer skills, including knowledge of:
- MS Office
- Infographics tools
- Adobe software
Duration
- The internship is typically one month in duration.
- It generally commences from the first working day of each month, unless otherwise specified.
Number of Seats
- 50 interns are selected each month until all eligible applications are covered as per the programme guidelines.
Location
Selected interns may be deployed at:
- New Delhi (Main Secretariat)
- Central Agency Section at the Supreme Court
- Litigation HC Section at Delhi
- Branch Secretariats in:
- Chennai
- Mumbai
- Kolkata
- Bengaluru
Selection Process
Applications will be shortlisted through the Internship Portal.
Selected candidates will be informed through email or the portal notification system.
Submission of Internship Report
At the end of the internship, interns must submit:
- A monthly report, and
- The research work assigned during the internship
These must be submitted to Admin-1 (LA).
Certificate
Interns will receive a Certificate of Internship upon satisfactory completion of the programme.
Requirements include:
- Minimum 90% attendance
- Positive evaluation from the supervising authority
This is a full-time, in-person internship, and interns are not expected to engage in other academic or professional commitments during the programme.
Honorarium
Interns may receive an honorarium of ₹1,000 upon successful completion of the internship.
Key Terms & Conditions
- Interns must arrange their own accommodation.
- Working hours are generally 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM unless otherwise permitted.
- Interns must follow the rules and regulations applicable to departmental staff.
- A Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) must be signed, and confidentiality must be maintained.
- The internship does not constitute employment or guarantee future employment with the Department.
- In case of unsatisfactory performance, the internship may be discontinued.
- The Department may terminate the internship at any time without assigning reasons.
- Formal dress code: Black trousers and white shirt.
