The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) is an independent judicial body established by the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Based in Hamburg, Germany, it adjudicates disputes arising out of the interpretation and application of the Convention. It is one of the most prestigious international forums for legal professionals specializing in maritime and environmental law.

About the Opportunity

ITLOS offers a three-month intensive internship (October – December 2026) within its Registry. Interns gain an inside look at the daily operations of an international court, interact with Tribunal members, and contribute to high-level research on the Law of the Sea and public international law.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Education: Must have completed at least 3 years of university studies. Open to current LL.B./LL.M. students or recent graduates.
  • Age Limit: Normally not more than 32 years of age.
  • Language: Proficiency in English and/or French is mandatory.
  • Field of Study: Primarily Law, but also open to International Relations, Political Science, and Translation.
  • Nationalities: Indian students and aspirants are fully eligible to apply.

Key Tasks & Research

  • Legal Research: Working under legal officers to prepare research notes on complex maritime issues.
  • Independent Paper: Interns must conduct research on a specific topic of their choice and deliver an oral presentation to the Legal Office.
  • Weekly Press Review: Collaborative tracking of global developments in maritime law.
  • Library Access: Full access to the extensive ITLOS library facilities for academic depth.
