Higher Traffic Fines & Jail Time for Violators Starting March 1, 2025 - New Traffic Rules

To improve road safety and reduce reckless driving, the Indian government has introduced stricter traffic fines. Under the new rules, people who break traffic laws will face much higher penalties, including heavy fines, possible jail time, and even community service for repeated violations.
The key changes are:
- Drunken Driving - Fine increased from ₹1,000-₹1,500 to ₹10,000 and/or six months of imprisonment for the first offense. Repeat offenders face a ₹15,000 fine and/or two years of imprisonment.
- Riding without a Helmet – Fine raised from ₹100 to ₹1,000, with a three-month license suspension.
- Not Wearing a Seatbelt – Fine increased from ₹100 to ₹1,000.
- Using a Mobile Phone While Driving – Fine increased from ₹500 to ₹5,000.
- Driving Without a Valid Licence – Fine increased from ₹500 to ₹5,000.
- Triple Riding on Two-Wheelers – Fine increased from ₹100 to ₹1,000.
- Driving Without Insurance – Fine increased to ₹2,000 with a three-month prison term or community service. Repeat violations will attract ₹4,000.
- Driving Without a Pollution Certificate – Fine increased to ₹10,000 and/or up to six months in prison with community service.
- Dangerous Driving – Fine increased from ₹500 to ₹5,000.
- Blocking Emergency Vehicles – Fine raised from ₹1,000 to ₹10,000.
- Racing or Speeding on Public Roads – Fine increased from ₹500 to ₹5,000.
- Overloading Vehicles – Fine increased from ₹2,000 to ₹20,000.
- Jumping Traffic Signals – Fine increased from ₹500 to ₹5,000.
- Offenseslicense by Juveniles – Fine raised from ₹2,500 to ₹25,000. Guardians/vehicle owners will face three years of imprisonment, vehicle registration cancellation for one year, and the juvenile will be ineligible for a driving licence until the age of 25.
Therefore, the government has approved the new traffic fines, which will be enforced from March 1, 2025. Drivers should follow the updated traffic rules to avoid heavy fines and legal trouble.
